Example of a Jōnin

Jōnin (上忍, Jōnin; Literally meaning "Elite Ninja") are the high-ranking elite shinobi of a village. As such, they are generally deployed on the most dangerous assignments and have a significant amount of trust and respect from the village. They are often sent on A-rank missions, and experienced Jōnin may even be sent on S-rank missions (which are considered to be the greatest difficulty). Notably, Jōnin are well rounded in most, if not all aspects of shinobi techniques, including Genjutsu and Fuuinjutsu. It is also common for Jounin to possess two types of Nature Affinity.

When a shinobi becomes a Jōnin, they gain both esteem and responsibilities. Some Jōnin are assigned a three-man team of Genin, and occasionally Chūnin to train and supervise, as well as accompany them on lower ranking missions. They train these Genin to prepare them for their own promotions and to also make them competent ninja. Their methods of training vary from village to village, and also from ninja to ninja.
Some Jōnin possess a spot on the village council, and are involved in important decisions regarding the shinobi aspects. It is partially their on whether or not the Kage of the village should remain permanent until retirement or death. In addition, there are special ranks amongst the Jōnin. One of these ranks is the Jōnin Commander, or Head Ninja.

Promotions

The process of becoming a Jōnin is rather mysterious for those who are not Jounin themselves. It is not known if there is an exam, similar to the Genin and Chuunin Exams, or if they are promoted through a high mission success rate. Shinobi who show exceptional skill in one area may be promoted to Tokubetsu Jōnin.
